He was born in 1921. He attended local schools before working in a bank for a short time. At the age of  ineteen he joined the army. He stayed in the army and rose through the ranks, becoming a general in 1960.
In 1967, he was appointed acting president of his country and the following year he was elected full president. He was re-elected president six times.
In May 1998, two months after he was re-elected president for the last time, mass demonstrations and riots caused him to resign from office.
He was later charged with corruption, but declared unfit to stand trial.
